Cory's been rockin' the national scene for quite some time! One of his first projects-Razamanaz- is currently enjoying world-wide play and is Live365 's number one pick for most requested band on INTERNET radio! RAZAMANAZ was formed in 1991 by Britny Fox Guitarist Michael Kelly Smith during a Britny hiatus. Singer/guitarist Cory Massi, bass player Joe Bisbing, and drummer Steve Attig completed the line-up that fervently stormed the local clubs and immediately garnered label interest in Europe and Japan. A deal never came to fruition and the material was never released. That is until now! LOW- Aside from the many bands Cory has fronted- it was this brilliant ongoing project that followed tight on the heels of Razamanaz in 1995 that set Cory ablaze! LOW featured Cory on vocals/guitar, Nick Douglas (Doro Pesch) on bass, Johnny Dee (UFO and Britny Fox) on drums and the late Mario Parillo (Oktober, Deadly Blessing, Doro Pesch) on lead guitar. They were well on the way to super stardom- but sadly, they were a band lost forever because of the untimely death of Mario. He was truly an integral part of this union. Their self-titled EP had the industry buzzing! Catch a few of their tunes on the Listen page. |

Here's what Brett Van Put had to say about: Razamanaz..Razamanaz- Perris Records 2004 "It seems appropriate that Pennsylvania rockers Razamanaz would name themselves after a Nazareth record. Not only is their sound similar, but Razamanaz was formed by Britny Fox guitarist Michael Kelly Smith following their 1991 album Bite Down Hard and the formers decade hiatus. The fifteen tracks on this self titled debut were recorded back in 1993 and as we all know Nirvana and Pearl Jam were on top of the charts and no one wanted anything to do with this type of music. The band received some attention from Japan but ultimately this album went on the shelf until last year when Perris Records stepped in to get a proper release. "Urgency" is a great kick ass rocker and the perfect opening track. Vocalist Cory Massi shows his charisma and talented voice off beautifully. "Feel It" actually sounds like an old Britny Fox song. There are some covers here as well as Razamanaz would often play Kiss ("King of the Night Time World") and Paul Revere And The Raiders ("Kicks") songs as well. "Call of the Wild" sounds like an Aerosmith song (they also cover "Seasons of Wither") and there's a reason why the song "Swamp Slide/ Bad Feeling Blues" is named as such. "Rock and Roll Outlaw" and "Tied Up" are great up tempo rockers. Sure there was some really bad music to come out of the eighties (like the new Britny Fox record as well), listening to an album like Razamanaz I can't help but think this is better than a lot of the nu metal crap on the radio these days..."
....Razamanaz is band that should have made it, had the stuff to make it but just got buried in the grunge revolution. This CD consists of finished original tracks, covers and assorted studio demos that could have made this band big if not in the U.S., Japan and Europe. The covers include Kiss’ "King Of The Nigh Time World", Aerosmith’s “Seasons Of Wither” and the Raider’s "Kicks". The Aero cover is as close as you are going to get to the original as Cory Massi has some incredible pipes that reflect Mr. Tyler’s. The originals included here demonstrates that Michael and Cory were pushing their song writing skills beyond that of Britny Fox or Cory's band LOW into bluesier territory. The demos are just as good as the finished songs and I do like the cover of the Ventures classic “Walk, Don’t Run”.
Razamanaz. Now there’s an ‘80s band name. There’s probably some deep meaning behind it; maybe one of the band members had a “vision.” Or, they probably just thought it sounded cool. Regardless, the CD that never saw the light of day when it should have is shining now, offering some hard rock reminiscent of the days when metal ruled the airwaves.
The band is lead by guitarist Michael Kelly Smith, of Britney Fox fame. The interesting part about the band is singer/guitarist Cory Massi. In many ways, he sounds like Joe Elliot in his On Through the Night/High and Dry days. To paraphrase a line from another Metal Express reviewer, Def Leppard lost a good singer when Elliot learned how to sing, but this CD really brings you back.
The first track, “Urgency,” sounds quite a bit like old Def Leppard. The musicianship is a little clearer than the aforementioned band, but Massi is dead-on for an Elliot sound alike here. It’s a very cool introduction to the band, and a song that is impossible not to like.
You’ll get a Cult feel on the next song, “Feel It,” especially with the guitars bouncing speaker to speaker and the thumping drum kicking in. Vocally, it’s Massi doing Elliot again, but sooner or later, you’ll quit making comparisons and just enjoy the vocals. This song is more in touch with the happy ‘80s metal.
Though they don’t slow it down much on the CD, the song “Seasons of Wither,” is their strongest offering. The song is bluesy, and you’ll get more than a little Tesla comparison here at the beginning of the song. Massi is a chameleon in many ways, sounding like all of the good vocalists of that era, and it makes the CD enjoyable. It’s surprising no one published this back in the day, but since the band wasn’t formed until 1993, grunge was still pissing in the pool, drowning out hard rock bands.
They do a few covers here as well, and the best is the Kiss cover of “King of the Night Time World.” But the Paul Revere and the Raiders cover “Kicks” is done well too. It sounds a bit out of place, since the song is so mellow, but it does make the CD that much more interesting.
The CD actually has 15 tracks on it — studio, live and covers — so you get your money’s worth. You’ll have to check out “Rock and Roll Outlaw,” just because you’d swear this live version is Def Leppard again.
Razamanaz isn’t going to win the award for most innovative rock band. Sure, they do sound like a few different bands, but again, they sound like a lot of GOOD bands. Nothing wrong with that. And of course, Smith does play riffs that will remind you of Britney Fox as well. But playing in a genre like this, you’d better be above par if you even want someone to look your way. Looks like they hit a birdie.
And here's what the fans had to say..
...'Seasons Of Wither' is one of the best Aerosmith covers I've ever heard! Very true to the original. I'll probably pick this one up. ....Recorded around 1993 and not released until 2003, this rocks harder than the current Britny Fox CD. The sound is a bit raw and edgy but should make most fans happy. This is some good stuff. The cover of Aerosmith's 'Seasons Of Wither' was done with class and is one of the best Aerosmith covers I ever heard. Recommended.
Cory has also lent his vocals on various recordings over the last few years.. Look for updates to this site coming soon! |
